Tax Refund

When making a purchase of over 30,000 won at a Tax-Free Shop in Korea, a foreign traveler must pay total prices and individual consumption taxes included in the price of items at major airports and Tax-Refund business branches nationwide through their Tax-Refund counters.

Tax Refund Process

  1. Before making a purchase, verify that it is a certified Tax-Free Shop that provides tax refund services!

    Tax-Free shops, signs, and receipts will usually appear similar to the image shown below saying 'Tax-Free.'

  2. When purchasing items, present your passport and then receive and keep a tax refund receipt.

    If in the case you wish to make a refund of a purchase made at a Tax-Free Shop, the refund can be refused if you do not present a tax refund receipt or if a document is incomplete.

  3. You can apply for Tax Refunds at major Airports and Nationwide Tax Refund business branches nationwide. However, you must depart within three months from the date of purchase.

Immediate Tax Refund

A system that immediately deducts the tax included in the product when purchasing goods at a Tax-Free Shop. (Applied when one purchase amount is less than 500,000 won, and a maximum purchase amount per person is less than 2 million won.)

Your passport must be presented when purchasing items, and the traveler must have left the country within 3 months from the items' date of purchase that meet the specific conditions.

Tax Refund Candidates

  • Foreigners who have stayed in Korea for less than 6 months

  • Overseas Koreans who have lived abroad for more than 2 years or have lived in Korea for less than 3 months

  • Individuals who are not obligated to pay taxes in Korea
